Acid Wash
Acid wash is a fabric treatment technique that involves using a combination of chemicals and physical processes to create a unique and aged appearance on denim or other fabrics. The process typically involves treating the fabric with a strong acid solution to remove the colour from certain areas, resulting in a faded, washed-out appearance. Acid wash was particularly popular in the 1980s and is often associated with vintage and distressed denim fashion.

VISUAL EFFECT
Faded, marbled, washed-out surface
INTENSITY RANGE
Light, medium or heavy, per wash standard
Benefits
Bleach-soaked stones tumbled with the garment lift colour unevenly, giving the faded, marbled acid-wash look. Strength is set at Light, Medium or Heavy.
Limitations
The wash opens up the fabric surface, so it suits garments where a softer, worn hand is the intent. Strength of effect is set at approval and confirmed on the production quality.
Process
- Workspace Setup: Gather the materials and set up a well-ventilated workspace. Wear protective gear (gloves, eyewear and a mask) to limit exposure to fumes.
- Chemical Preparation: Dilute the hypochlorite bleach with water as the manufacturer instructs.
- Wash Cycle: Load the acid wash balls into the machine, spread evenly among the garments. Run the machine to agitate and tumble the load, and monitor until the target level of distressing is reached.
- Rinsing & Neutralisation: Rinse thoroughly with water to remove the chemical. Neutralise with a neutralising agent if needed.
- Drying & Finishing: Dry according to the care instructions. Use abrasives for extra distressing.
- Washing & Quality Check: Machine wash to remove residues, then inspect the fabric.
