DYE-1007

Pigment Dye

Pigment dye is a type of dyeing process used in the textile and garment industry to colour fabrics and garments. Unlike traditional dyeing methods that involve the chemical bonding of dye molecules to the fabric, pigment dyeing uses pigments or colour particles that adhere to the surface of the fabric.

Specifications

CATEGORY

Dye

VISUAL EFFECT

Soft, slightly faded surface colour

INTENSITY RANGE

Variable, sample-dependent

Benefits

Pigment sits on the fibre surface, which gives a soft hand and a washed, slightly faded colour straight from the process. Wide shade range in the lighter and mid tones.

Limitations

Deep and very dark shades are difficult to reach with pigment. Absorption varies by fabric, so tonal variation across a piece is part of the finish.

Process
  • Fabric Preparation: Pre-wash the fabric to remove impurities. This helps the pigment adhere.
  • Dye Preparation: Fill a plastic bucket with warm water, add the cationic pigment dye, and stir to an even solution.
  • Dyeing: Submerge the wet fabric in the dye solution until it is fully saturated. Soak for the recommended time, stirring now and then for even colour.
  • Rinsing & Fixation: Remove the fabric and rinse it under cold water to remove excess dye. If needed, apply a cationic fixative to set the colour, following the dye instructions.
  • Washing & Drying: Wash separately in cold water with mild detergent to remove loose dye particles. Air-dry, or tumble dry on low heat as the care instructions allow.
