Dye

DYE-1004

Cold Dye

Cold dye typically refers to a dyeing method where fabric is dyed using cold water rather than hot water. Unlike traditional dyeing methods that require heat to set the colour, cold dyeing relies on time and chemical reactions to achieve colour bonding. This technique is often used with certain types of dyes that can work effectively at room temperature. Cold dyeing can produce unique and subtle colour variations on fabrics.

Specifications

CATEGORY

Dye

VISUAL EFFECT

Subtle, even colour laid down without heat

INTENSITY RANGE

Variable, sample-dependent

Benefits

Runs without heat, so energy use is lower than a hot dye bath. Gives a soft, slightly uneven surface colour with a lived-in look from the first wash.

Limitations

Shade depth is influenced by fabric and dye concentration, so results vary between fabric types. Colour is less resistant to fading than a reactive dye, which suits a garment intended to soften with wear.

Process
  • Workspace Setup: Set up the workspace.

  • Fabric Preparation: Pre-wash the fabric, then wet it before dyeing.

  • Dye Preparation: Mix the pigment dye with its binder.

  • Dye Application: Apply the pigment dye to the wet fabric.

  • Drying & Heat Curing: Air-dry the fabric, and heat cure it if the dye requires this.

  • Quality Check: Check for the intended textured look with subtle colour variation. Follow the dye manufacturer's guidance throughout.
