Pigment Dye + Acid Wash

A combined garment treatment. The garment is first dyed with pigment for a surface colour, then acid washed to create random contrast and a worn, distressed effect. The result is a vintage, high-contrast finish with strong character and texture.

VISUAL EFFECT

High-contrast vintage: pigment surface colour lifted by acid wash

INTENSITY RANGE

Variable, non-repeatable per garment

Benefits

Gives a strong vintage, distressed character with natural variation, so no two garments come out the same. The level of contrast and texture can be set to suit the design.

Limitations

Low reproducibility in bulk, and shade varies between fabric lots. The combined chemical and mechanical action can weaken the fabric, with holes appearing at seams, cuffs and hems; over-washing gives a harsh result. The pigment layer also limits colour fastness.

Process
  • Garment Preparation: Use undyed or pre-washed garments, clean and free from contaminants.
  • Pigment Dyeing: Apply pigment dye with binder for the base surface colour.
  • Drying & Heat Curing: Dry, then heat cure to fix the pigment onto the fabric. This step is critical.
  • Acid Wash: Wash with stones or chemicals to create faded, high-contrast effects.
  • Neutralisation & Rinsing: Neutralise the chemicals and rinse thoroughly to prevent damage or yellowing.
  • Finishing & Quality Check: Soften if needed and dry. Then check the contrast, shade, hand-feel and fabric quality.
