Spray Wash

Spray wash is a fabric dyeing and washing technique that involves applying dye to fabric using a spray bottle or similar spraying method. This technique allows for controlled and localised application of dye, resulting in a speckled or gradient effect on the fabric. Spray washing is commonly used to create unique patterns, textures, and colour variations on clothing, fabric, and other textile items.

VISUAL EFFECT

Speckled, localised sprayed colour variation

INTENSITY RANGE

Localised/graduated

Benefits

Dye or wash solution sprayed by hand gives speckled, localised colour variation with control over where it lands. Suits spontaneous, individual finishes.

Limitations

Coverage varies across the piece, so intensity is approved as a range rather than a fixed value. Fine detail is outside the scope of a sprayed finish.

Process
  • Fabric Preparation: Choose the fabric and dampen it with water to help the dye absorb.
  • Dye Preparation: Dilute the fabric dye as the manufacturer instructs, and fill a clean spray bottle with the solution.
  • Spray Application: Hold the bottle a few inches from the fabric and apply the dye in a controlled way. Speckling, blending or layering can vary the effect.
  • Rinsing & Washing: Rinse out excess dye, and wash with mild detergent to set the colour.
