[UA] BEACH CLEANUP DAY - SAVE THE OCEAN

[UA] Team

Nov 20, 2023

On November 12, 2023, more than 300 UA staff members, along with friends and family, embarked on a beach cleanup initiative.

On November 12, 2023, Un-Available, a Vietnamese sustainable garment manufacturer, partnered with Gaia Nature Conservation Center to host a beach cleanup initiative in Can Gio. The goal is to strengthen environmental protection and promote awareness by addressing litter and poorly managed waste. In addition to the cleanup, Un-Available employees and their families seized the opportunity to explore the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, gaining enriching knowledge and experiences.

From the early hours, a gathering of more than 300 individuals, including UA employees and their families, converged at the Binh Tan company location, getting ready for a trip to Can Gio, just a 2-hour drive away. Throughout the journey, participants were also provided with informative sessions on relevant environmental topics, such as proper garbage disposal methods and the location of garbage dumps in Vietnam.

[UA] BEACH CLEANUP TEAM

Upon arriving at Can Gio at 10 AM, they immediately launched into the cleanup activities following a brief opening ceremony. Despite the harsh weather, characterized by extreme heat and sweat, participants, both adults and children, eagerly forged ahead, getting their hands dirty as they dug into the sand, climbed over rocks, and worked together to extract the trash. Cleaning the beach proved to be more challenging than street cleanup, given the disintegration of plastics, burial beneath the sand, making it more difficult for the pickers.

Remarkably, in just half an hour, an impressive quantity of nearly 1.3 tonnes of debris was collected, with the majority comprising items washed ashore, buried in the sand, entwined in nets, and mixed with seaweed.

PEOPLE GOT THEIR HANDS DIRTY UNDER THE HARSH WEATHER

Following the program, all waste gathered by UA employees was transported to a landfill and processed by an environmental company in accordance with regulations.

PILES OF RUBBISH HAVE BEEN COLLECTED

As a business in the textile industry, one of the planet's largest environmental polluters, generating 10% of the total carbon emissions and consuming a significant portion of the world's water resources, Un-Available consistently initiates specific actions for a sustainable future.

Last year, in 2022, Un-Available also collaborated with Gaia to plant and enrich a 1-hectare forest in Dong Nai, with the participation of over 150 employees. This year, recognizing the significance and urgency of the Can Gio beach cleanup activity, Un-Available expanded the program's scale with the participation of over 320 people.

Furthermore, the program incorporated a visit to the Biosphere Reserve in the Can Gio region, allowing everyone to explore and gain insights into the intricate mangrove ecosystem. Subsequently, in the afternoon, participants freely wandered the area, immersing themselves in the diverse specimens of plant and animal species showcased in the exhibition house.

HI MONKEY, HOW ARE YOU

The exploration of the ecological dynamics involving Duoc trees, Mam trees, Thoi loi fish, and long-tailed monkeys took on the form of a game called "Treasure Hunt." Participants traversed the forest to complete tasks related to the mentioned elements. This interactive game not only fostered a sense of competition but also provided a hands-on experience of the natural phenomena, encouraging engagement and learning.

Departing Can Gio at 3 pm, the UnAvailable team headed back to HCM, carrying with them a shared sense of positivity and emotion stemming from their experience. Expressing feelings of meaning, gratitude, happiness, excitement, and a myriad of other emotions, the team's reflections provided a promising outlook for future environmental trips.
